The Government of Maharashtra established PMRDA - Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority, to carefully plan the development of Pune city, the neighboring connected industrial city of Pimpri-Chinchwad and the surrounding area of 7,357 sq.km, composed as Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR)

On the 31st of March 2015 the Urban Development Department of Maharashtra established PMRDA as an independent autonomous body.

PMRDA is a body with constitutional rights responsible for the planned development of the Pune metropolitan region.

Vision and Objectives of PMRDA

Vision for PMRDA is to develop the Pune Metropolitan Region as an international premium investment destination and improve the liveability index.

Some major objectives PMRDA is expected to serve are,

• Facilitate planned growth of infrastructure and public services through long-term planning, and enforcing the development plans
• Enhancing the ease of doing business for domestic and international investors.
• Stimulating economic development in the region, and generating sustainable employment and wealth creation opportunities for different stakeholders
• Improve living and happiness index in the region
• Developing systems of futuristic governance and market-based economy
• Drive green innovation with digital management & information dissemination.
• Providing for roads, water supply, sanitation
• Metro Railways and necessary infrastructure
• Integrating culture and heritage into the ecosystem of PMR

PMRDA Authorities

Chairman

Shri Eknath Shinde, Chief Minister, Government of Maharashtra is chairman of the authority, which is the highest policy-making body of PMRDA.

Metropolitan Commissioner

Metropolitan Commissioner is an appointee by the Government of Maharashtra. S/he heads the office of PMRDA.
Rahul Ranjan Mahiwal (I.A.S.) is Metropolitan Commissioner. (June 2023)
