C-DAC is the premier R&D organization of the Department of Information Technology (DIT), Ministry of Communications & Information Technology (MCIT), Government of India, for carrying out research and development in IT, Electronics, and associated areas.

Also to fulfill the need to develop human resources for the growing demand for skilled and trained human resources needed in the domain areas of advanced IT, C-DAC also facilitates education and training courses related to computing through C-DAC ACTS (Advanced Computing Training School)

C-DAC Pune has the distinction of being the first C-DAC center established in India and since then has been leading the organization's research and development initiatives including many national programs of strategic importance to India

C-DAC Pune was involved in the development of the first indigenously developed PARAM supercomputer when only a handful of world nations had developed such supercomputing capacities. Subsequently, open frame architecture PARAM Yuva was developed, being among the world's fastest and top supercomputers.

CDAC Pune was also involved in pioneering products, services, and platforms for multilingual users in India and abroad.

Other area where C-DAC has made strides include geomatics, human-centered design and computing, informatics in health, education, and training.
